Memoirs of Hans Hendrik, the Arctic traveller

Hans Hendrik. Memoirs of Hans Hendrik, the Arctic traveller. London, 1878.
Hendrik, a native of Greenland, was the first Inuk to publish an account
of his Arctic explorations, which spanned a period of twenty-three years.
He was hired primarily to hunt, drive a sledge, and look after the dogs,
but also acted as interpreter, and helped build snow houses, etc. He and
Ebierbing were instrumental in saving the lives of 19 members of the Polaris
expedition, who survived for more than 6 months on an ice flow as it drifted
south from Smith Sound to the waters off Labrador, where they were rescued by
Newfoundland sealers.
