Toronto's main street for most of the 19th century was King Street, shown here looking east from Toronto Street.

This part of King was the focal point of the early city, home to many of the principal shops, (left to right) the jail (1827-1840), the courthouse (1827-1855) and St. James Anglican Church (1833-1849). Not seen is the Market/City Hall, which was at King and Jarvis.

The artist, Thomas Young, was a well-known Toronto architect.
